This is just a small tutorial how to use clipping mask and how to invert a layer.

I have got questions how I do this, and why.

Because my english is bad I have problem to explain. So I have done this little tutorial instead. And i hope it will be helpful.

I change color on a dress in an easy way by using Clipping Mask and by invert the layer. That is what I show here.

For you as has asked me, I hope this will help.

Hello, I have a little question about this tutorial. In the first step where it says "cut her out" in the palette pic I see that alongside there's 2 layer: one with the girl in original yellow color and another image with a black background. I wonder, it's the result of the 'cut her out' that show that black 'mask'? What kind of tool I should use to cut her out? (I've used the magic wand)
Even if I add the cliping mask, I still can brush even outside the girl! How is it possible that only the dress is painted?
Please can you help? Thanks!

here a pic of what I've done

You have to cut her out before you start change the colors. Other wise the clip mask is not useful.

For the cut out you can use any tools you like best. But first cut out. Then you can start color the dress and use a clip mask.
Sorry for my late replay.

Thank you, now is clear! Without clipping mask then, I would color also the 'white background' right? But by using the clipping mask (and cut out the girl) I can start to use the color (and keep doing the same work that I could make with a normal mask. I understood that the difference is just that a normal mask you affect everything maybe, and with clipping mask, affect only 1 layer)
PS: don't worry the late reply, I have to thank you for the help! Nod

How would that be done? I've turned my model's dress white, but the shading is opposite. It's light where it should be dark in the shadows.

Yes I know its very difficult to turn something to white.
And you have to try different things every time. It depends much on the original.
To make something in white and still keep the shadows its difficult.
It wont work with only one step. I will try it and then I can explain to you.

Yes it easy. But remember its not only for changing color.
What ever you have to do with an object or model use clipping mask.

If you for example want to light up your object a bit and you use levels. Then the adjustment will
effect all the layers below the object.
Thats why you shall use Clipping Mask. Then the adjustment only effect the object. And you can make as many adjustments layer you want on the object, just use Clipping Mask for every adjustment.

Sometimes I have more then 10 clipping masks on an object because there is so many adjustments to do before I am pleased.

So clipping mask is a must! =D Try it!

Yes you have to try, it will help you in your work. Its very easy.
If you dont are familiar with Clipping Mask you shall try to use it.
Its so perfect when you work with an object and have several adjustment as only
shall be on the object. Then just do a Clipping Mask for every adjustment. =D

Oo yes it is! =D
Remember that you can have as many adjustments layers as you want when you use Clipping Mask.
So if you have an object as need several adjustments, just make clipping mask of all of them right to the object and you can work free with only the object. It will not infect the layers below.
